Washington - Consumer electronics companies are continuing to make major inroads in the TV set-top-box market. Zenith Electronics Corp., for example, has won a contract worth a potential $1 billion to make digital terminals for the Americast consortium.
Zenith will use a digital set-top-box design by Divicom Inc., Milpitas, Calif. The unit is based on the PowerPC microprocessor. Motorola Semiconductor Sector is reportedly a strong candidate to supply the chips.
Zenith has long been a major vendor of analog set-top boxes, but it was slow to field models in the emerging digital cable market. The company had formed a joint venture with Philips Consumer Electronics to develop a new digital box, but last year that effort foundered and largely...
