Yuba County officials have decided to let Beazer Homes and other builders in the Plumas Lake area start construction on the 11,000-home project, even though levees protecting the area will likely need to be upgraded to fend off floods.
Plans for Plumas Lake got splashed with cold water recently when federal officials said the levees protecting the area might not be high enough. But the 5,263-acre project is the county's primary growth area. Builders believe the area, because of its relatively low land costs, is their best bet for adding moreaffordable homes in the Sacramento region.
Beazer plans to start building this month. To ease the worries of potential homebuyers, the company will provide two years of free flood insurance.
"We want to be sure (that) if our customers have a flood issue, they have insurance," said Tony Tonso, president of Beazer Homes of Northern California. "We don't think the fix for the levees will take that long. This way, I'll be able to sleep at night. So every time it rains, I won't be looking at the water levels."
