Piper
It's impossible to keep your friends from learning that you're studying the bagpipes. In fact, it's very difficult to keep your friends while you're learning the ancient instrument.
As a result, Sgt Stephen McNaughton, stationed at MCAS Iwakuni, has spent a lot of time on various baseball diamonds during the past three years. It's the only place on the station where he can practice on his bagpipes and remain on good terms with the men who live in his barracks.
McNaughton got interested in bagpiping while he was still a civilian in Bath, Maine. At first he was content to collect bagpipe records, but then his parents ran across a piper's practice chanter and an instruction booklet. Young McNaughton embarked on his solitary hobby.
When he joined the Marines four years ago, he put his pipes in storage, but last year, on Okinawa he had his pipes sent to him and recommenced his study. His pipes went back into the lockerbox when he was transferred to NAS Memphis, Tenn., for says McNaughton, "There was no place where I could play them."
At MCAS El Toro, his next duty station. He solved his problem by practicing on the ball diamond, and continued the habit when he came to Iwakuni.
To date he has given no concerts, or appeared in public beyond his rehearsals in the open. His repertoire consists of 15 tunes, most of the Scottish airs which aren't well known by the general public. One of them, however, needs no introduction. It's the Marine Hymn.
