SYRACUSE--As of 12:01 a.m. on July 7, Community General Hospital (CGH) officially has a new owner and a new name.
The facility, located at 4900 Broad Road in the town of Onondaga, is now called Upstate University Hospital at Community General.
"We want to be sure people understand that we're going to operate one hospital in two locations," Dr. John McCabe, CEO of Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, says regarding the name change.
The acquisition closing ended a yearlong process of meetings, public comments, and a state-government review.
Upstate University Hospital is a teaching hospital that's part of the State University of New York Upstate Medical University.
Upstate on March 24 announced it submitted a certification of need with the New York State Health Department which started the formal approval process for its acquisition of CGH.
The health department's Public Health and Health Planning Committee approved the certificate of need for the acquisition at its meeting on June 16.
