Opulence is the watchword for this selection of new and lavishly restored properties. Ben Lerwill reports.
CAFE ROYAL, LONDON
Taking its name from the legendary high-society coffee shop that previously occupied its Regent Street site, the lavishly restored Cafe Royal opened in December with 159 rooms and suites. Meeting and banquet needs are well catered for, thanks to five separate function rooms, two of which can seat 110. Its showpiece Grill Room Restaurant - complete with eye-popping Louis XVI decor - serves modern takes on classic dishes, while a major 1,200m2 spa and wellbeing centre will open over the summer. Room rates start from pounds 400 plus tax.

SHANGRI-LA AT THE SHARD, LONDON
Currently taking bookings from the start of September, the 202-room Shangri-La At The Shard is poised to bring high-end hospitality to London's tallest building.
The hotel will be spread across 18 floors (from levels 34 to 52) and is due to feature three meeting spaces, all facing the river - the largest of which will seat up to 110. Paris is currently the only other European destination with a Shangri-La hotel, and guests at the London property can expect polished service, opulent decor and quality dining Highlights will include a signature bar on level 52 and an infinity pool. Rates are yet to be announced.
