There's nothing better than walking out of a cold winter day to be enveloped in the warmth and aromas of the Southside Bistro, an upscale eatery in south Anchorage that is a favorite of mine.
I don't often lunch at the Bistro - my budget won't support it - but when the occasion calls for a business lunch or just something special, I would recommend it.
The place has a quiet ambience and slow pace that invites good conversation, and for me that's important. I heartily dislike noisy, busy places where you have to strain to hear your lunch guest.
The Southside Bistro is located in the Huffman Business Park, off the New Seward Highway. It can be a bit out of the way, but if you want a discreet place to discuss a deal without being seen or overheard, this is it.
Plus, the Bistro is kind of a family place. You'll see children, well-behaved in this atmosphere, having lunch with grandparents.
On a recent visit, I was seated promptly by polite and friendly staff. I'm a light lunch-eater, so I normally stick to soups and small salads, but I couldn't resist pondering the menu and, well, wishing.
There was the Calamari with spicy mariana sauce. Mmmm ... I love Calamari. At $8.50, the price wasn't bad. Then there were Manila clams with olive oil, wine, garlic and herbs, or Blue Shell mussels with saffron, tomato and cilantro (at this point I was getting hungry) priced a bit higher, at $11.50.
