Spruce McCree is president of Crosscreek Television Productions in Alabaster, AL, which operates six production trucks. The latest-Voyager 8 HD-was custom-made for the drag racing circuit.
"We built it client-specific for NHRA [National Hot Rod Association] said McRee. Drag racing is big business. NHRA will hold 24 races in venues coast to coast in its next season which begins in February, 2008.
ESPN captures and telecasts the entire NHRA series on HD. Crosscreek, a longtime ESPN partner, built Voyager 8 mainly to accommodate the network's requirements after it decided to go to HD production for NHRA. The truck, completed in August, is presently working some college football events, also for ESPN-a kind of dry run for the hot rod action.
What does McRee think of the industry's transition to HD? "I hate it because it's expensive," he half-jokes....
