The resort town of Branson, Mo., may be best known for its live entertainment, but the roughly 4,000 patriotic residents would also like it to be known as home to the largest event in the nation commemorating Veterans Day.
This fall Branson will host the third annual "A Veterans' Homecoming" celebration, Nov. 5-11. Numerous events scheduled to take place include presentations and receptions, the 63rd Annual Veterans' Day Parade, the Veterans' Reunion Registry at the 76 Mall Complex, the traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Branson Scenic Railway Troop Train, a 1OK run/ walk, the Lennon Brothers Stage Door Canteen Dance and Party, the Fifth Annual Tony Orlando Yellow Ribbon Salute to Veterans, and other free or discounted entertainment at many of Branson's theatres, shows and activities.
Branson's first veterans' celebration occurred in 1995 and was so well-received by both veterans and the people of the community that it has become an annual event. "Veterans throughout the nation were able to experience Branson's sincere appreciation for their sacrifices in an incredible way," said Dan Lennon of the Welk Resort Center and co-chairperson of the Veterans Day Task Force in both 1995 and 1996. "The community has joined behind this event to offer veterans the most spectacular welcome-home celebration in the nation."
According to the Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors Bureau, more than $1 million of free entertainment was offered to veterans visiting Branson that first year. A long list of entertainers has supported "A Veterans' Homecoming" by either performing special shows in the theatres or offering their time and talent at the numerous presentations. Well-known stars who have been a part of the celebration in the past include Mel Tillis, BoxCar Willie, Tony Orlando, the Lennon Brothers, the Lennon Sisters, the Osmond family, Anita Bryant, Roy Clark, Moe Bandy, Bob Hope, Andy Williams, Wayne Newton, Charley Pride, Bobby Vinton, Jennifer Wilson and Jim Stafford.
