On the national map, Texas is one of 50 states, but on the world scene, it is a powerful economic player. Texas' 1996 gross state product of $551.8 billion is larger than the gross national product (GNP) of most countries. Compared to countries, Texas has the 11 th largest economy on the planet, just below that of Spain. On a per-capita basis, Texas climbs to 7th place internationally, between Singapore and Germany.
