Summit Brick & Tile Inc. is a family-owned Pueblo business, founded in 1902 by Joseph C. Welte. His son, Ralph J. Welte, took over as president when the company's founder died in 1943.
Ralph operated Summit Brick until his death in 1992, when his sons, Joe and Tom Welte, assumed the company's operation. Joe is primarily in charge of mining and production, and Tom mostly handles sales and shipping.
A sister, Anne Henne, sits on the company's board of directors as secretary-treasurer, and takes part in making major management decisions. Henne is not involved in the company's day-to-day operations because she is as a full-time occupational therapies in Pueblo. However, she offers her expertise in Summit Brick's ongoing safety program.
Fourth-generation Weltes are also involved in the success of Summit Brick & Tile. Tom's daughter and four of Joe's sons work here when not in school, to help pay for their education and to have spending money.
