Though he got his start in retail, developer John Saca's dream was to be involved in real estate. He's now fulfilling that dream through his companies, NAI Saca Commercial and Saca Development.
Saca's father, Tony Saca, founded Filco Discount "Centers Inc. 28 years ago. John and his brother and sister worked in their father's appliance stores virtually from the time they learned to talk.
After attending college at the University of California at San Diego, John came back to Sacramento, one year shy of a degree, to open a Filco store with his brother, David Saca, now president of Filco.
But he soon realized that the business wasn't for him.
"Retail has been very good to our family but it's a real tedious business," he says. "You're putting in long hours and it wasn't rewarding.
"My father always said that Filco gave him the seeds," Saca adds, "but then he planted them in real estate and thats when they flourished."
A bit of dabbling: So John turned his focus to real estate, initially dabbling in the residential market. In the late '80s, he and his brother worked with a builder to construct about 17 new homes in Southern Cali fornia.
