Some 8,000 Indiana Michigan Power customers in South Bend have more power over their energy use choices as a part of Smart Meter Pilot Project, among the first in the country to test a "smart grid" approach to conservation.
Participants can monitor and control their energy use online whenever they like, because digital meters installed on their systems are connected to a two-way radio frequency communications network.
The technology allows I&M to take meter readings remotely, connect and disconnect service remotely, and detect service interruptions more quickly.
