North-side fondue institution Shaffer's Restaurant has closed, leaving one retail tenant on the nearly 10-acre Glendale Plaza near Keystone and Broad Ripple avenues.
Shaffer's closed July 16, according to a sign on the door, because of a death in the family. The sign indicated the closing would be temporary, but the restaurant hasn't reopened and the business's phone has been disconnected.
Management or owners of Shaffer's couldn't be reached for comment. The restaurant was founded by members of the Shaffer family, who sold the restaurant to management in 1998 following the death of Greg Shaffer. His brother, Glen, went on to start Hambones Cafe and Slop Shop, which had locations in Carmel and downtown Indianapolis before closing this year.
The restaurant, which offered a menu of steaks and entrees in addition to its signature fondue, had been a fixture on Hillside Avenue more than 30 years, said Michael Bloom, a principal in Chicago-based Metro Realty, which owns Glendale Plaza.
