Following more than 20 inches of rain within 24 hours in the New Braunfels, Texas, area, most of Schlitterbahn Waterpark Resort was under water. Officials say damage "was significant, but reparable." They estimate damages will easily top $1 million.
While no structural damage was done to any of the rides or attractions, the Rapids Resort section sustained extensive damage. Three buildings with a total of 16 guestrooms were totally washed away, and an additional 45 guestrooms in other buildings received "substantial" damage, either from floodwaters or debris. Many of the other 230 rooms were flooded as well.
"The rains came Oct.17 and by noon, we knew we were going to be in trouble," said the park's Sherrie Brammall. "The water started coming over the banks of the Comal River, which runs next to us, and it didn't stop until some parts of the park were under 20 feet of water."
In the Surfenburg section of the park, most of the attractions were completely submerged by Sunday (18) afternoon....
