INFOWORLD Window Manager columnist Brian Livingston has often written about the irrecoverable drain on Windows system resources as you open applications and windows. There are now, however, a handful of programs that win back some of these precious resources through memory "compression" and other techniques.
Connectix Corp.'s RAM Doubler for Windows 1.0 will supplement free system resources (FSR), compress virtual memory, and prevent Windows DLLs from loading into the first megabyte of memory. Don't confuse this utility with that venerable quartet of DOS memory optimizers: Quarterdeck Office Systems Inc.'s QEMM, Qualitas Inc.'s 386Max, Helix Software Co.'s Netroom, and MemMaker of Microsoft Corp.'s MS-DOS.
