Internet Security Systems, an Atlanta-based supplier of network security assessment tools, is helping companies protect their network devices from the WinNuke or out-of-band data attack. WinNuke is a method of attacking Windows-compatible computers by sending a packet of out-of-band data to the NetBIOS port of a Windows 95 or Windows NT machine, which causes it to crash. Although Microsoft has issued fixes for Windows NT 4.0 and 3.5 and Windows 95, industry observers are encouraging users to implement better monitoring and detection tools. Internet Scanner for Windows NT 4.3, for instance, lets an administrator proactively test a network to determine which machines are vulnerable to WinNuke. It also can check for red-button vulnerability. This security hole lets malicious computer users gain access to applications through a back door in Windows NT. Internet Scanner for NT is now available for download off the ISS Web site at www.iss.net.
