Students, young professionals and individuals who have experience in the engineering field may have at some point considered working toward obtaining a professional engineering (PE) license. As part of our commitment to the professional development of young professionals in the mining industry, the Young Leaders Committee offers the following information and advice.
There are many reasons why someone may want to become a professional engineer. It may be an individual goal and personal challenge to obtain a license or a desire to open up new opportunities for employment and promotion. Many companies and government organizations require an employee to be licensed to perform and certify engineering work and in order to obtain a certain level of responsibility.
In the mining industry, it is required that each mine submit regular mapping updates to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration. These maps must be certified by a licensed engineer or surveyor. Also, if an individual desires to be a mine engineer or engineering manager, the addition of a PE license to his or her résumé can only help in reaching this objective.
Reasons to take the PE exam
Obtaining a PE license is also very helpful in setting one apart from others who may have similar experience but are not licensed. Becoming a professional engineer shows commitment to continuing education and to the profession. It is the only legal way for an engineer to offer engineering services to the general public.
