Can PR save the government of Kenya from its image of corruption and inefficiency? According to a report in the Nairobi daily newspaper The Standard, a government-sponsored task force investigated the question and recommended the establishment of public relations units in every government ministry, with the goal of providing clear and cogent information on its operations to the public. The Kenyan government is now deploying three new PR experts to each of its 34 ministries and has allocated $1.3 million to purchase new office equipment to assist each of the newly hired Public Communication Officers (as they are officially known). This is a fairly substantial investment, by Kenyan standards, but government spokesman Alfred Mutua justified the expense by explaining: "We should accept that the government's image has been badly destroyed and be prepared to pay heavily to redeem it."
