From practical agronomy issues through to applied research - there was plenty for potato growers to hear and see at Potatoes in Practice, held at Gourdie Farm, Invergowrie, Dundee. The event was organised by the Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI), Scottish Agricultural College (SAC), British Potato Council (BPC) and CSC Crop Protection. Joanna Baker reports.
Using well targeted tank mixes of two insecticides at least twice a season with resistant products is key to controlling aphids and keeping a low level of virus on seed potato crops, according to Dr Andy Evans, entomologist, SAC.
Aphicide resistant aphids have been found in Scottish potato and vegetable crops, so the choice of aphicide is key to minimising the risk of resistant aphids arising on crops and consequently transmitting virus, says Dr Evans.
