'Conservative' growth of convenience format planned
MELVILLE, N.Y. - In late August, Pergament Home Centers plans to open a 22,000-square-foot store inside a 25,000-square-foot former Key Foods supermarket in Baldwin, N.Y. That store would represent the first new unit the recovering retailer has opened in three years.
The company, based here, is also negotiating to open a 20,000-square-foot home center inside a 23,000-square-foot unit to be part of a new strip mall in The Bronx, MY, that would include a CVS drug store, a bank and other local businesses.
These stores are components of a "conservative" growth strategy that Pergament's new owners, who acquired the company late last year from Westdeutsche Landesbank, are pursuing to resurrect a retail operation that, over the previous decade,...
