Rick Schwab started with Delgado Community College's maritime, fire and radar program in 1996.
With multiple industry-related certifications ranging from occupational safety and health to being a Coast Guard-approved instructor for numerous courses, Schwab has helped build a program that trains up to 8,000 maritime workers annually. That training includes firefighting safety, CPR, first aid and security.
"If you're a mariner, you have to have this training to obtain a license," Schwab said. "This training is part of their continuing education. We train everyone from the deck to the wheelhouse."
