One celebrated Euromarket individual who was not sipping mint juleps on the after-deck of his yacht, was our friend Jim O'Donnell of Citigroup, which used to be called Salomon Smith Barney back in the fun, no holds-barred days.
As we all know, SSB has been laid to rest on Boot Hill, which is a great pity because let's all be honest and admit that plain "Citigroup" leaves the same after-taste as a mouthful of blotting paper.
Personally, we blame the premature demise of Salomon Smith Barney on the wishy-washy management skills of former chief executive, Mike Carpenter, and the fall from grace of the supremely glib Jack Grubman.
Carpenter, who was pushed aside, but not out of Citigroup, by his boss, Sandy Weill, wouldn't say boo to a goose and was certainly no match of the fast talking Grubman.
