Rewriting utilities with Java to aid cross-platform move
NOVELL INC. PLANS to rewrite most of the major NetWare utilities, such as NetWare Directory Services (NDS), in the Java Web programming language to make them portable to other platforms.
Although Novell is continuing a native port of NDS to Windows NT, the company now sees Java as a quick way to get utilities onto other platforms, including NT and Unix systems. Java-based utilities are due to begin arriving later this year.
In addition to NDS, utilities such as file and print services and NWAdmin, the NDS administrative utility, also could be written to Java, said Mark Griffiths, director of product marketing for Novell's Internet Commerce Division, in San Jose, Calif.
Java provides a programming language that is independent of different processor types, thus making it a good cross-platform porting tool, said Drew Major, Novell's chief scientist, in Provo, Utah.
