Officers and crew of the NOAA ship Ka 'imimoana paid homage to the great 18th century navigator, explorer and surveyor, Capt. James Cook. The ship had just completed a 33-day cruise to deploy TAO moorings along the 125W and 140W meridians, and stopped at Kealakakua Bay, Hawaii, to whitewash the 20-foot obelisk memorial inscribed with Captain Cook's name.
The Ka imimoana had first obtained permission from the British Consulate General in Los Angeles to maintain the monument. In his gracious reply, the Consulate General stated: "I should be grateful if you could convey the appreciation of Her Majesty's Government to all those involved in...
