Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands has announced plans to support trials of mobile phone-based payments using near-field communication (NFC) technology in Amsterdam and Seoul.
Japanese credit card company JCB will pilot an NFC contactless credit payment scheme this autumn in the Dutch city. Initially, JCB will target 100 cardholders in Amsterdam as well as merchants in and around the city's World Trade Center.
Cardholders will be supplied with a Nokia mobile phone which has an NFC chip from Royal Philips Electronics. They will be able to pay for goods by waving the phone at contactless payment terminals in participating merchants. The first phase of the pilot will evaluate technological aspects and operational feasibility, including customer ease of use. The pilot partners hope to expand both the cardholder and merchant bases as the project evolves.
