NetNearU, an Internet access provider formerly PayNet Communications Inc., April 25 announced plans to order 1,500 Web Kiosks from NCR, a provider of relationship technology solutions for the retail, financial, communications, travel and transportation, and insurance markets, initiating a partnership that will make available Internet and e-mail access potentially anywhere outside the home. Installation will begin in May, 2000. NCR and NetNearU, in conjunction with PBG, a payphone enclosure manufacturer, will offer a complete turnkey solution, including hardware, software, enclosure, installation and deployment. The partnership will also provide for a most comprehensive maintenance arrangement, covering cash collection, remote management, cosmetic maintenance and equipment repair. Located in airports, restaurants, hotels, convention centers, shopping malls, office buildings and other public-access areas, the Web kiosks will offer consumers access to the Net. The kiosk will accept cash for time spent using it, like a payphone, and other revenue streams will come from advertising potential.
