Coco Chanel once said "Fashion fades. Only style remains."
Not only does that quote appear prominently inside women's clothing retailer Molly's of Denver, but it also serves as a fitting mantra for the 20-year-old store that got its start at Denver's historic Brown Palace Hotel.
Today, Molly's of Denver is located in the Equitable Building at 1660 Stout St. in downtown Denver. But owner Molly Broeren opened the first incarnation of Molly's in March 1981 in a 192-square-foot store that today is home to the Brown's gift shop.
Brown Palace Hotel director of catering Mary Hawley has been at the 230-room hotel since 1974 and recalls how tiny the first Molly's was.
"It was so small you could hardly get two people side-by-side in it," she said.
Despite such a tight fit, Broeren posted first-year revenues of nearly $212,000. Last year Molly's of Denver recorded a record $1 million in revenue.
