San Jose, CA--RBOC giant-killer Metropolitan Fiber Systems (MFS) has announced a new offering which the company describes as the first metropolitan and nationwide network allowing companies to interconnect geographically dispersed LANs at native LAN rates. The new service--high-speed LAN interconnect (HLI)--is being provided by an MFS subsidiary, MFS Datanet. It will have the capability to connect Ethernet, Token Ring, fractional FDDI, and other types of deployed LAN systems in a protocol-transparent fashion. MFS will supply the hookup at the local exchange, and will lease DS3 lines from interexchange carriers such as AT&T and Sprint to provide the long-haul connection for HLI customers. MFS Datanet plans eventually to bring HLI to all 14 of its MAN installations.
