Bending prepainted metal can be accomplished in several ways. The most basic approach is the use of a press brake with Vee die, where a laminate or fabric is used to isolate the tool from metal, or where the tool is made from urethane. This is ideal for low production volumes, but the safety risk of metal "whip-up" is unavoidable with Vee die tools.
Roll forming probably accounts for the greatest volume of prepainted metal bending. High production prepainted-metal parts can be formed this way with good results. However, the tools are usually not designed to be easily changed for running a variety of part shapes, and bending around the perimeter of a box-shaped part is impossible. Roll forming is ideally suited to forming dedicated parallel bends down long edges.
