Application: Symantec PartitionMagic 8.0
Operating System: Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
In the days before PartitionMagic, you were forced to use the dreaded FDISK command or NT's Disk Administrator to modify partitions. FDISK and Disk Administrator are both only partially useful because they can't modify an existing partition without destroying all of its data. If you tried to use either one to resize a partition, you'd first have to back up all the files, re-create the partition, restore the files, and then hope for the best. PartitionMagic works dynamically, so you can change the size or format of any partition without losing data.
PartitionMagic can be an invaluable tool for administrators who build and maintain NT workstations. PartitionMagic is the ultimate disk management utility, giving you the power to view, create, and modify hard disk partitions on the fly, as shown in Figure A. You can use PartitionMagic to dynamically create, move, copy and resize partitions, change the file system, securely erase a partition, and run multiple operating systems. The professional version of PartitionMagic lets you manage partitions on remote LAN clients and create scripts to automate your partitioning commands.

PartitionMagic is incompatible with NT Server. Symantec sells a separate, more expensive product called Server Magic, which is designed specifically for NT servers.
PartitionMagic is easy to install on an NT client. After installation, open the program, and you'll see the window shown in Figure A. This window displays three views of the local machine's hard drive with details on each partition, including the file system, size, and status. You can use...
