When you're a claims administration firm, size matters.
That's size as in the number of claims serviced, and Berdon Claims Administration, an affiliate of the Jericho-based accounting firm Berdon, has hit the mother lode.
Berdon expanded its operations to take on its latest and greatest class action suit, the action in which United Health Group was accused of under-reimbursing members for visiting doctors out of its network between 1994 and 2009. Under the terms of the settlement, about $350 million must be divided up among all class members who file claims.
Berdon landed the assignment after submitting a bid to handle the class action suit to New York City-based Pomerantz Haudek Grossman & Gross, the law firm for the American Medical Association, the plaintiff. The Berdon bid won despite competing against at least three other national claims administration firms.
This case represents a substantial increase in workload. "We think at this point we have about 650,000 physical claims submitted that we have to read through," said Michael Rosenbaum, managing director of Berdon Claims Administration. "We think it will be higher though, considering some...
