Leadership and management are two opposing styles of employee supervision actively used within today's business world. Between leadership and management, which one is most effective and what is the.difference between the two? Both styles (leadership and management) are analyzed as they are applied within a team-based work environment. Now it is necessary to describe a team-based work environment and demonstrate what can be accomplished within that setting by using leadership.
Teamwork is something all modern leaders strive to accomplish and labor to achieve. Why is it so difficult to accomplish teamwork in today's cutthroat business climate? Becoming a team means showing a high level of trust most achievers in the workplace are unwilling to give. "There is no "I" in team." This statement has been widely quoted for good reason, because it rings true.
Did John Elway trust Shannon Sharpe to catch every pass he threw his way? Absolutely! Did Elway expect every pass to be caught? Absolutely not! Most modern-day supervisors do not have the capacity to expect some minor setbacks on the journey to the ultimate goal. Instead, these managers keep track of all the failures incurred along the way, and don't focus on all the successes. In fact, most performance evaluations are based on failures and not accomplishments.
Just think what would have happened if John Elway kept track of every time Shannon Sharpe dropped a pass. If Elway always reminded Sharpe of the dropped passes, the mistakes would probably occur more frequently. As a result, Elway would then have passed to Sharpe less frequently and finally refused to throw Sharpe's way at all.
This is a surefire way to tear down a team, not build them up. Back-to-back Super Bowl Championships are not achieved in this fashion. The end result of keeping a mistake tally-book on your employees could be even more disastrous for your company. Teams torn apart are rarely rebuilt.
