KPJ Healthcare, the healthcare division of Johor Corp Bhd, has strengthened its foothold in Penang with the recent opening of the multi- disciplinary KPJ Penang Specialist Hospital (KPJ Penang) - its 19th hospital nationwide - in Bandar Perda, Bukit Mertajam.
Envisaged to be a self-contained intelligent township in Bukit Mertajam, Bandar Perda makes an ideal site to facilitate KPJ's expansion into Penang.
According to its website, Aseania Development Sdn Bhd, which is the township's joint developer with the Penang Regional Development Authority (PERDA), says it has successfully developed more than one third of the total 182.4-hectare Bandar Perda into various residential, industrial and commercial properties under Phase 1 & 2 of the RM3 billion development since its privatisation in November 1994.
The Beginning
Construction of KPJ Penang began in 2007 following the signing of a sale and purchase agreement between Aseania Development, PERDA and KPJ Healthcare in December 2006.
`The construction cost of KPJ Penang was about RM45 million while another RM25 million was spent to equip the hospital with state-of-the-art technology. So the cost comes to about RM70 million,' KPJ Healthcare's General Manager Abdol Wahab Baba tells Malaysian Business. Wahab is also the Executive Director of KPJ Penang.
