As the recently named president of the State Bar of Michigan, Jon R. Muth is on the verge of something new.
And that's just where the energetic attorney with Miller, Johnson, Snell & Cummiskey likes to be.
"I have a very low tolerance for boredom," he said. "I guess that's why being an attorney suits me so well -- every day is different; every case is different."
Muth, 47, jokingly admits he and his wife, Carol, have come to an understanding about his equal passions for variety and sport, as the sets of cross-country skis, running shoes, racquetball rackets and bicycles quietly fill space in the house and garage. The latest challenge he has planned is to bicycle across the country in 22 days for his 50th birthday.
"I thought I ought to do something silly for my 50th birthday, and this seemed as good (an idea) as anything else," he said.
Professionally, Muth has added diversity to his plate by filling U.S. District Attorney nominee Michael Dettmer's shoes as State Bar president.
Although he will not officially step into the role until March 4, the challenges of the position are not new to him. Muth has served on the State Bar's executive committee since 1989, moving from the position of treasurer, to vice president and president-elect.
