Former Democratic presidential candidate Rev. Jesse Jackson was arrested at the South African Embassy on Monday.
Jackson, who was accompanied by two of his children, called upon demonstrators to boycott companies that do business with South Africa.
He pointed in particular to Westinghouse Electric Corporation, accusing that company of supplying South Africa's government with components for military equipment.
Jackson's arrest was preceded on Sunday by a massive rally at Shiloh Baptist Church in Northwest Washington. At the rally, about 500 anti-apartheid protestors joined prominent Black leaders and organizers of the Free South Africa Movement to listen to a number of moving speeches against apartheid.
The demonstrators also heard from Pennsylvania Congressman William Gray about pending anti-apartheid legislation in Congress.
Gray said that the legislation would prohibit U.S. companies from making new investments in South Africa. It would also prohibit the sale of South African gold coins or kruggerands and the country...
