Abstract

To put that in perspective, charging your phone over the nextfive years will add 3.6 kilos of CO2 to the atmosphere, which isless than half of what a single of gallonof gasoline produces in your car. Your mobile phone certainlyisn't leading the march to global warming - driving tothe grocery store creates more emissions than a phone does in ayear - but then again there aren't 2.5 billion cars inNorth America. As the wireless industry evolves, though,we'll be embedding more radios in more devices until, presumably, we'll live in world where almost everyconceivable object is interactive and networked - and eachwill have its own power demands. The mobile device'scontribution to the world's energy and environmental crisismay not be excessive today, but it's setting itself up to bea much bigger factor in the future.
