During recent discussions on two of the IMA's e-mail exchanges, your colleagues offered tips and techniques for interviewing job applicants. Perhaps some of them will work for you the next time you need to make a hiring decision.
* Make the candidate talk first. It's human nature that if you tell the candidate all about the job and what you expect first, he or she will tailor comments and responses accordingly. To avoid this, Ralf Kahl, a cost manager at Estee Lauder, suggests you begin with small talk and a brief overview of the job and company, then get into the "meat" of the interview.
* Ask open-ended questions. This avoids getting a string of "yes" or "no" answers.
* Ask about actual experiences. Ask candidates to think of a time that they encountered a particular situation, explain the actions they took, and...
