Williamsburg's dining scene soon may be known for more than its taverns, where comely servers in 18th-century garb offer peanut soup and other Colonial fare.
Starting next summer, comely servers in orange nylon shorts and bare-bones tops may be seen serving spicy chicken wings, signaling the arrival of a Hooters restaurant a few miles away from the historic district.
Virginia & New York Wings, a Hooters franchisee with six stores on both sides of the Hampton Roads divide, is progressing with its plans to open a 4,500- to 5,000-square-foot restaurant next year on Bypass Road in York.
We have been looking at the Williamsburg area for some years, said Greg Knox, one of three partners of the Virginia Beach-based franchisee.
Not only have other restaurant chains such as Applebee's and Red Lobster already staked out their turf on Williamsburg's periphery - They are similar to Hooters - the Williamsburg tourism and golf market and its long seasons look promising, he said.
Of course it's slightly different than the downtown market, Knox said with reference to other Hampton Roads Hooters restaurants. It's a little bit more upscale.
