On August 22 the Department of Health and Human Services issued a notice of proposed rule making (NPRM) that would replace the ICD-9-CM code sets now used to report healthcare diagnoses and procedures with greatly expanded ICD-10 code sets. The change would be effective October 1, 2011.
The NPRM calls for the adoption of the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) for diagnosis coding, and the ICD-10 Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-PCS) for inpatient hospital procedure coding. The new codes would replace ICD-9-CM volumes 1 and 2 for diagnosis codes and ICD-9-CM volume 3 for procedure codes.
In a separate notice, HHS proposed adopting the updated Xl 2 standard, Version 5010, and the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs standard, Version D.0, for electronic transactions such as healthcare claims. Version 5010 is essential in using ICD-10 codes.
