The Associated Press reports that a gender discrimination lawsuit brought by a former Seattle Post-- Intelligencer sports reporter who was passed over for a columnist job was recently settled out of court. Lawrence "Bud" Withers claimed that the paper violated a state ban on the use of gender as a "substantial factor" in employment decisions when it hired Laura Vecsey as a sports columnist in 1994. Withers' attorneys said the palintiff was told the aper had no intention of hiring a new columnist anytime soom at the same time it was courting Vecsey for the position.
