Abstract

France's telecommunications policies continue to speed toward the 21st century despite its changing politics and governments. The goal of France Telecom is to provide the best service to its customers and to confront head-on competitors who get in its way. Attempts to liberalize telecommunications in France have met with both successes and failures. Progress has been made toward competitive paging, and deregulation has been recommended for private mobile radio services. However, talk of a 2nd national provider of basic service has been abandoned. France Telecom's Director General Marcel Roulet accepts the constantly changing nature of the telecommunications industry and he believes it is the same in other countries. One of his priorities is to increase the quantity of France Telecom's traditional voice, text, and data services. The company is also introducing new services to ensure its future competitiveness. For example, it is investigating cordless public phone-point services with British Telecom. Plans are also under way to cable the country.
