In the United States the use of flexible staffing arrangements is widespread among establishments of all sizes and in all industries, according to research by the Michigan-based W.E. Upjohn Institute.*
The arrangements examined by the Institute are narrower in scope than the flexible work arrangements discussed on the previous page. Researchers surveyed 550 establishments with five or more employees to gather information about the use of (1) temporary agency workers, (2) short-term hires, (3) regular part-time workers, (4) oncall workers and (5) contract workers. The found that:
46% of establishments use workers from temporary help agencies.
