OK, WE PUT OURSELVES INTO a mess this year with the annual list of largest trucking companies.
When FedEx Corp. of Memphis bought out American Freightways Corp. of Harrison, Arkansas Business quit listing it on the basis that it no longer was headquartered in the state.
So last year, the list only included 15 companies.
But it didn't seem right to exclude what is now FedEx Freight because it employs more than 1,100 at Harrison and remains one of the dominant companies in Arkansas.
However, if we include FedEx Freight, there are other national companies with sizeable operations in the state to consider, such as YRC Worldwide Inc., the trucking giant that includes Yellow Transportation, Roadway and other subsidiaries. And Con-Way Inc. and Schneider National Inc. are other large companies.
Then, should the list be limited to just contract carriers? What should be done with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Tyson Foods Inc., both of which are Arkansas-based companies with large trucking fleets?
