Hofstra University is flying flags at half-mast and planning a moment of silence at commencement, following the death of the school's former president, James M. Shuart.
Shuart, who was 85,served as Hofstra's seventh president, leading the school from 1976-2001 through a period of growth and transformation.
He is survived by his wife Marjorie Strunk Shuart, whom he married in the spring of his senior year at Hofstra, their sons James and William, their wives and five grandchildren.
