The city of Des Moines is well on its way to meeting its goal of completing the East Village streetscaping project this fall. THe $2.3 million renovation to the area includes new sidewalks, street lights and upgraded utilities.
"It's an economic development project to serve as a catalyst for development along the avenue that leads up to the state Capitol," said Sid Lane, city architect.
The defining element of the project, which will span Locust Street from the Des Moines River to East Seventh Street, will be 99 slabs of granite depicting each of Iowa's counties built into the sidewalk.
