TODD SELBY.OURCOVERPHOTOGRAPHERTHIS MONTH, LAUNCHED his Web site, The Selby, as a venue for the environmental portraiture he was shooting outside his editorial assignments. His audience grew as his growing list of subjects visited the site to see photos of themselves, and then spread the word to others. Having gained a loyal online following and international notoriety, Selby landed new ad clients and a book deal.
Selby's decision to publish without help from magazines was inspired by the efforts of the L.A. -based nightlife photographer Mark Hunter, who posts his photos of underground parties and clubs on his site, TheCobrasnake.com. Selby says Hunter "was very influential in teaching me that a photographer's work and personal projects do not need to be focused on just magazines...
