Oral health in the US is steadily improving. Statistics indicate dental visits are increasing and cavities and the total number of extractions are continuing to decline. As Baby Boomers comprise the largest segment of the US population, their aging and corresponding dental needs indicate continued high-growth and business success for dentists! According to the American Dental Association Survey Center, in 1960 the average American had only seven teeth at age 65. Today, that number has increased to 18-24 teeth at retirement.
The aging of Baby Boomers and their corresponding dental needs has already statistically demonstrated a steady growth rate in dental businesses throughout the US. From 1979 to 1990, the total number of oral checkups increased by 12 per cent. According to the 1992 National Health Survey, approximately 57 per cent of the US population visits dentists each year. This increase is attributable to increased patient education with an emphasis on prevention and cosmetic procedures, including bleaching/whitening, orthodontics, bonding, and porcelain veneers.
Recently, taboos regarding medical and dental professionals advertising their services have changed. In utilizing this powerful medium, dentists will continue to increase public awareness of good hygiene and oral health to consumers. Many cosmetic procedures have higher profit margins, but are considered electives and currently not covered by insurance policies. Lack of insurance coverage on cosmetic dentistry equates to less price control by the insurance companies and a higher profit margin for dentists.
The needs of an older dental population have a positive effect on profit primarily because complicated procedures such as implants to replace missing teeth and periodontal surgery to treat gum disease, are common among people over 50 years of age. Many of these procedures require the services of dental specialists.
