After insurmountable roadblocks in NYC, company brings 'Fresh' to own backyard
BELLEVUE, WASH. - Back in 1999, Costco Corp. planned to enter the Manhattan market with a new store concept that would focus on high-end groceries in a smaller format. But the plan was detailed in 2000 by escalating construction costs in New York City and some neighborhood opposition. But this month, the retailer put Costco Fresh back on the rails with plans to open a prototype store closer to home in Bellevue, Wash., in 2003.
