Troubled Austin, Texas-based Conquest Airlines shut down again July 28 because it was unable to pay its insurance bill. Ben Bradley -- a self-described businessman with no airline experience -- has taken over as the airline's chairman and CEO. He says that he and his partner, Jack Eaton, another Oklahoma businessman, were not fully apprised of Conquest's financial position when they offered a cash infusion of $250,000 to get the airline started again after it shut down July 3 (C/R News July 14, 1997, p. 5). All workers except the FAA-mandated positions of flight operations, maintenance, safety and chief pilot have been furloughed, he adds.
