Paula Auburn knows business.
She's not merely a professional who hit a crossroads in her career and decided to wear the consultant's hat. She's been educating and consulting people about business since she got her master's degree in industrial relations from the University of Minnesota more than 20 years ago.
In addition to her duties as pregident and CEO of CS Associates, a local consulting firm specializing in labor relations, Auburn teaches graduate business courses at Notre Dame.
In fact, after teaching business at various Indiana University and Purdue sites as well as Saint Mary's, she considers herself a teacher first and a consultant second.
"I think it's a challenge to present new ideas to a group of people in a way they can understand and use them," Auburn said. "The fun part is when you see them learning and grasping the ideas."
She said teaching and consulting complement each other.
"Teaching also forces you to stay up to date. You really have to stay up with research and literature," Auburn said.
Auburn decided to form CS Associates about 15 years ago with three other business colleagues: Phyllis Emmons, Chuck Leone and Jean Wehr, a businesswoman who lives in Ohio.
